Five tries in Grey day out High-scoring Roos prove toughness

05 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
WYONG winger John Grey scored five tries - and missed another two - as the Roos scored a 42-18 win over Maitland in their Tooheys Cup rugby league match at Kanwal on Sunday.

Grey gave an early indication that his confidence was running high.

When he crossed for the team's first try in the scoreboard corner, the former Manly under-20 player opted not to immediately ground the ball.

Instead, he took off on an audacious run between in-goal defenders, eventually planting the ball closer to the posts amid desperate cries from the Maitland players to "Smash him!" and equally desperate calls from his team-mates to "Put it down!".

Wyong led 24-6 at the break, but the positive vibe in the dressing room was tempered by the news that English prop Chris Feather had sustained rib damage and would take no further part in the match.

X-rays on Monday confirmed Feather had a broken rib.

Feather's front-row partner Kene Te Whata then took on extra responsibility, producing quality charges into a brutal Maitland defence which continued to hit with intent all game.

Te Whata produced his best run of the game early in the second stanza.

After busting the defence from deep in Wyong's half, Te Whata set off on a long surge which set up a try on the next play.

Te Whata's performance earned the admiration of his coach, and former NRL prop, Paul Stringer.

"I gave Kene my three points, and he got the players' vote for the players' player, as well," Stringer said.

"And I thought Kyle Butler, who started the game for me at lock, was also outstanding in only his fourth game of first grade."

But it was Grey - a reluctant winger - whose five tries reflected the dominance of a left-side attack led by centre Jamie Davis.

While the win showcased Wyong's skills and fitness, there was serious toughness there, too.

Opponents continue to learn the hard way that such a high-scoring team can be so resilient.

This Saturday, Wyong takes on Cessnock at Cessnock Sportsground.

¦ Macquarie, meanwhile, scored a 36-24 win over Lakes United at Peacock Field.

The Scorpions have signed injured prop Danny Vaughan for next season, along with former Parramatta and South Sydney reserve grade prop Trent Dally as captain-coach.

This Sunday, Macquarie tackles the Northern Blues at Tomaree Sporting Complex at 3pm.
