WADALBA Community School PE teacher Lara Welham is shooting for a little bit of redemption.

A former national netball league star, the 28-year-old has come out of retirement to revive her elite club netball career with the NSW Swifts in this year's trans Tasman competition.

Swifts coach Julie Fitzgerald offered Welham a place on NSW's roster after injury sidelined goal shooter Kim Borger.

Welham and Queenslander Jane Menzies were the only two players to contest every game for the Hunter Jaegers in four seasons before the trans-Tasman league dispatched the Newcastle-based side in 2007.

In the UK on a working holiday, Welham played with English side the Brunel Hurricanes from the end of 2007 until retiring in April 2008.

"It's been quite hard," Welham said of training her competition return, which will come in the first round of the season on March 21.

"But it's all coming back and hopefully it gets back before the 21st of March."

Welham said frustration at her form at the end of her stint in England prompted her return.

"When I ended it I was pretty disappointed in how I had played," she said.

"So when Julie [Fitzgerald] called . . . I thought, 'Maybe I can redeem myself from how bad I played in London."

But the goal attack/shooter admitted just getting on court for the Swifts would be a challenge with Australian shooters Catherine Cox and Susan Pratley ahead of her in line.

Welham took up a part-time job teaching years 7 to 12 at Wadalba last year. Part of her role at the school involves her coaching netball.

A born-and-bred Novocastrian, Welham said she would not have been able to reignite her career if she worked further north.

"I would love it if something permanent came up there," Welham said.

"School at Wadalba finishes at 2.30pm so then I can still get down to Sydney for training at four so it's worked out perfect that I am working at Wadalba."
