Hook, Line & Sinker

01 Oct, 2009 12:00 AM
G'Day. Welcome to October and the Aussies aren't playing cricket in the Presidents Cup at all, seeing as how it's a golf competition between the Yanks and the rest of the world which starts next week.

They're playing the Champions Trophy and are going OK.

The weather's been crappy, the fishing's been average, but the footy's been great.

Geelong were worthy winners of the Aussie rules grand final last weekend, with their opponents Saint Kilda being valiant in defeat.

Here's hoping Parramatta can do the deed on the weekend, although Melbourne will take some stopping.

There were reports late last week of blue swimmer crabs being caught in a couple of different locations in the lake. Although it's still early in their season, there's reason to hope that the crustacean drought might finally be over.

The weekend's blow cruelled the fishing for everyone, although those lucky enough to get Monday off enjoyed some reasonably good fishing.

Old mate Billy Williams put the tinny into Lake Mac on Monday morning and managed to catch himself a couple of stud bream on small, shallow diving lures in "a backwater down Summerland Point way".

Billy also reports that some bloke at the boat ramp had a couple of bream, whiting, an extra large flathead and three of the biggest flounder he'd seen in a long time in his icebox, apparently all caught on home-made bait.

While the bloke wasn't giving too much away, his bait was made from tuna oil, Weet-Bix and "a couple of secret herbs and spices".

Did you know that there's a fish called a gobbleguts?

According to Sea Fishes of Southern Australia, the definitive guide to all creatures fishy, it's abundant in estuaries and bays along WA's west coast, preferring areas of reef, weed and sand.

That's it. Hopefully the weather will get its act together and we can all get out.
