Strikers score former jet in coaching role

04 Mar, 2010 09:36 AM
FORMER Newcastle Jets A-League star Steve Eagleton has joined the Morisset Strikers club as player-coach.

Keen to make the career transition from player to coach, Eagleton will lead the first grade side on and off the field and has already set a lofty goal for the fourth tier Northern NSW Football side.

"I'd love to be able to get Morisset up to the NBN [State] League one day," said Eagleton, who played with the Jets from 2005 to 2008 before being forced out with injury.

To gain promotion to the State League, the Strikers would have to win three competitions, at their present InterDistrict 2 level, then ID1 and First Division.

Eagleton realises his goal is a tall order but believes the club has the players to do it.

Morisset won the ID2 grand final last year after finishing fourth in regular-season competition. But only the regular-season winners are assured of promotion.

"First, I've given them all a challenge that we need to win the competition this year," Eagleton said.

"And we've had two trial games and we've had two good wins."

"We're still in the trial process. We're trying to get a few combinations happening and see how players go."

Last year's grand final winning coach Mick Gavin, who will coach reserves and assist Eagleton this year, believes simply having the former Jet on board gives Morisset a mammoth boost towards its State League goal.

"It's a double whammy," Gavin said.

"With him he attracts new good players and we get to retain good players because they are happy to play under such a quality coach."

Gavin said former Australian junior representative Kevin Schneider had been instrumental in Eagleton joining Morisset.

Schneider played with the likes of Socceroos Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton for the Australian under 17s.

He and Eagleton played together at Budgewoi before Schneider switched to Morisset last season with Chris Verrios, with the pair guiding the club to grand final glory.

Schneider has been suspended by the club due to an off-field incident, although he is appealing the ban.

The Strikers will take on Kincumber at Auston Oval, Morisset, on Sunday (March 7). First grade will kick off at 3pm.
