Mariners turn up the heat on frontrunners

08 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
THE Central Coast Mariners have continued their march up the A-League soccer ladder with a 4-nil win over Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The win sees the Mariners consolidate second spot on the ladder and move to 17 points - three points clear of third-placed Sydney, and three points adrift of competition leaders Brisbane.

Brisbane's 36-match unbeaten run ended when they suffered a 2-nil loss to Sydney on Sunday.

Adelaide endured their heaviest ever loss at home when the Mariners cut loose.

First-half goals to Mustafa Amini, Bernie Ibini-Isei and Patrick Zwaanswijk set up a commanding lead.

A goal to Rostyn Griffiths in the 66th minute put the matter beyond doubt.

The Newcastle Jets were also impressive in defeating Melbourne Victory 3-1 at Ausgrid Stadium on Saturday.

A double to Ryan Griffiths was a highlight for the Jets.

The weekend's results set up another enticing "F3 Derby" at Bluetongue Stadium this Saturday when the Mariners host the Jets from 5.30pm.
