TORONTO Workers secured their second consecutive Newcastle District Cricket Association club championship when their first grade team held on to defeat Merewether in the last competition round on Saturday.
An unbeaten ninth-wicket partnership of 44 between skipper Paul Toole (18 not out) and 17-year-old Josiah McCredie (17 not out) helped the Kookaburras to 8/177 which overhauled Merewether's 50-over total of 8/176.
Toronto Workers brought up the winning runs in the 49th over.
"There was a bit of pressure knowing that we were playing for the club championship and Josiah got us over the line," Toole said.
"It was a very mature innings."
The victory was not enough to get Toronto Workers into the first grade semi-finals which begin this weekend.
But Toole said there had been plenty of positives to flow from the Kookaburras' season.
He described winning a second consecutive club championship as a "tremeandous" achievement, and said there was plenty for the club to look forward to.
"By the end of the season we had seven players in first grade who were under the age of 21 which is really good for the future of our club," he said.
Among the Kookaburras' young brigade to make their mark in the top grade this season were batsman Matthew Gawthrop, 18.
"Matthew really came of age towards the back end of the season," Toole said.
"He got a nice century and batted nearly the whole day against Newcastle City and contributed heavily throughout the year."
Toole said Michael Radnidge made a good impression in the games he played in the top grade, while right-arm quick Jarrad Ninness, 17, was one of the club's big improvers.
Toronto Workers won the minor premiership in second and fourth grade.
"We're in a good position," Toole said.
