IT could have been a scene from Robin Hood's fabled Sherwood Forest with the ring of clashing swords filling the still morning air as knights in armour fought skilled woodsmen and even women wielded a blade.
In fact it was the annual mid-winter Jargeau festival in Wyee held in the forest on the de Mestre family property for the Australian Medieval Guild (AMGI) to host 150 people from re-enactment groups all over Australia.
AMGI is a Western Martial Arts sword fighting group who endeavour to bring history to life through the art of the sword.
AMGI has groups who meet each week in Wyee, Sydney, Singleton and Taree.
Wyee hostess Simone de Mestre said that like its associated groups, the Wyee group meets every weekend to enjoy themselves and to learn medieval skills, arts and crafts rather than to entertain the pubic.
"But the long weekend Jargeau festival is very special. It's a festival packed with three days of fun in the forest," she said.
"Medieval re-enactors from all over Australia arrive for three days of feasting, attend sword technique workshops, music, craft, single handed combat, fort battles and to simply soak in the feeling of a bygone era away from the hustle and bustle of today's traffic and modern technology. It's a terrific way to spend a long weekend," she said.
The Jargeau festival takes its name from the Battle of Jargeau which took place in France on June 11 - 12, 1429 and was Joan of Arc's first offensive battle.
"The Wyee group meets every weekend to practise sword fighting techniques and combat training and new members are always welcome ," Simone said.
