Winter games at Cooranbong

25 Mar, 2010 12:00 AM
ICE hockey, snow skiing and other Winter Olympic events were followed by building a snowman and throwing snowballs at Avondale School last week.

Yet this was in Cooranbong several thousand kilometres from the site of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, in Canada, and in about 20 degrees Celsius of Aussie sunshine.

The fact that the warm Australian sun should have been an impediment for snow-based activities cut no ice with enterprising teacher Graham Head.

He manfully shovelled six cubic metres of ice shavings from the Warners Bay Ice Skating Rink.

"There was enough of the frozen particles for the children to build a snowman and to have a friendly fight with snowballs," spokesperson Susan Rogers said.

"The students spent a fortnight learning about the Winter Olympics including the significance of the Olympic rings.

"The children also learned about the logo, the mascots of the Winter Olympics and their mythical roots in local legend," Ms Rogers said.

The in-depth classroom theory was then put to practical test with the students divided into competing teams for six of the Olympic events including innovative variants of miniature ice hockey, bob sledding and ski jumping.
