Weekends bang on

02 Jul, 2009 12:00 AM
BUTTABA resident Mirto Soligon's weekends have recently been starting with a bang and he says it's driving him and his neighbours crazy.

Triggering Mr Soligon's ire is the constant broadside of 12 gauge shotguns at the world class Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club at Wilton Road, just three kilometres away as the crow flies.

"It started a couple of weekends ago with the beginning of the Club's major events. The banging starts around 10am and goes on all weekend and it is so intrusive it even reaches indoors. I can't stay here in my own home, I have to go out when it happens," Mr Soligon said.

"My neighbour is having the same problem. He can't sit on his verandah on the weekends because of the guns firing. "

Mr Soligon says that he believes the problem comes from land clearing to make way for new subdivisions in and around the Buttaba area.

"I've been here for eight years and I don't think the gun club is really any different now to what it was then but it certainly was never as noisy as it is now. It also seems to be worse when the wind is blowing from the west and I suspect the bush was acting as a sound barrier," he said.

"I have contacted the club who basically said there was little they could do so I have now contacted council. Maybe a noise barrier would help. There are more subdivision areas being cleared around here so the problem is simply going to get worse."

Club secretary Graham Gosling said he was aware that noise had suddenly become a problem.

"For the last two weekends we've had respectively national and state title events but the number of guns going off at any one time is no different. We've been operating here for 18 years and this is the first time we have had serious noise complaints. Council officers have been out here this week taking readings," Mr Gosling said.

"We are in the top three of Australia's national shooting venues but of course we want to do the right thing by our neighbours.

"Our next major event will be the finals of the Australian Cup Olympic Discipline in November when the top Olympic guns will be here," he said.

A Lake Macquarie Council spokesperson confirmed the council had received complaints.

"Council recently received three noise complaints regarding the clay shooting target club. Council officers are investigating to ensure the club is operating within its approval conditions," the spokesperson said.
