EVERYBODY with a touch of green in their soul should be at Wangi Ridge Reserve on Sunday to celebrate National Tree Day.
That's when Lake Macquarie Landcare and the Wangi Ridge Preservation Board Landcare Group are using the Wangi Peninsula Green Corridor Project as a fun social day with a focus on environmental education.
National Tree Day is Australia's biggest community tree-planting event, and is a day for all Australians to help by planting native trees and shrubs.
The Wangi Peninsula Green Corridor Project is supported by the Federal Government's Caring for Our Country (CfOC) Community Action Grant program. The project provides $20,000 over 18 months for the restoration and protection of the wildlife corridor at Wangi Ridge that provides habitat for many native animals including Whip Birds, Bower Birds, Mopoke Owls, and Koalas.
The Wangi Ridge Preservation Board Landcare group has been rehabilitating areas in the reserve for 20 years and have established several walking tracks for the public to enjoy.
The National Tree Day community planting activity will focus on the old pig farm site in Wangi Reserve, which is the focus rehabilitation area for the Caring for Our Country grant.
Those interested should meet at the top of Reserve Road, off Watkins Road, Wangi, at 9am.
Register for attendance with the Landcare Resource Office on 4921 0392.
