Toronto's foreshore upgrade completed

11 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
A MINUTE of silence called by Gary Simon of the Koorana Aboriginal Corporation to show respect for Aboriginal elders marked the opening of a $1.44 million upgrade to Toronto foreshore Regatta Walk last week.

Mr Simon represented traditional landowners at the formal opening conducted by State Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, and Federal Member for Shortland, Jill Hall.

The Regatta Walk Foreshore facelift was funded by Lake Macquarie City Council with a contribution of $490,000 underpinned by a $950,000 grant from the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP).

Ms Hall said the upgrade would improve the amenity of the popular recreation area on the western side of the lake.

"More than 20 jobs were created during the construction of the foreshore upgrade, and importantly with the addition of the cafe and kiosk this will provide on-going economic benefit and job opportunities in Toronto," Mrs Hall said.

The upgrade included the construction of a new amenities block, outdoor seating and cafe, environmental protection works to the lake foreshore, pedestrian and cycle routes, and jetty improvements.
