THE plight of a little girl born with severe disabilities has captured the hearts of the Morisset community.
There has been an outpouring of generosity following a Lakes Mail article about 16-month-old Alekksis Galindo.
The Balcolyn girl has brain damage and cannot move on her own.
Alekksis' mother Marlene contacted the Lakes Mail in desperation after an arson attack claimed the family car.
"Since then we've had quite a few people contact us to help as we try and raise money for a new car and Alekksis' treatment. We've been lent a car while we look for a new one and other people have offered to help out with things like taking our girls for a walk," she said.
"We've also had a lady ring up who wanted to organise a raffle to help us.
"There's been a lot of love for us and it has been so fantastic."
Mrs Galindo said one of the most heart-warming acts of generosity was an offer by a local youth group to raise funds with a car wash.
"It's great to see young people doing such a lovely thing for others. It's hard for teenagers as they get a bad name because of people like the youths who burnt our car," she said.
"The group decided to raise some money for charity and took a vote and picked us. It's just such a lovely gesture."
Meanwhile Alekksis' struggle continues.
"She's had the flu really bad and she gets so congested and chokes," Mrs Galindo said.
"It took me two hours to get a tiny bit of fluid into her and she won't eat. She's headed to hospital this week for some treatment."
Southlake Youth will hold the fundraising car wash from 4pm-5:30pm today (Thursday) and tomorrow at Southlake Youth Centre, Fishery Point Road, Bonnells Bay.
