Safety-first approach by Eraring staff reaps reward

15 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
ERARING Energy staff have generously donated $18,500 to be shared between CanTeen and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The two groups were the beneficiaries of Eraring Power Station's Safety Performance Donation Scheme, which encourages safe behaviour and activities by Eraring Energy staff and contractors.

More than $150,000 has been donated to charities since the program was introduced in 2003.

Eraring Energy's operations manager Jeff Hogan presented one cheque for $9,355 to CanTeen's Samantha Gilyeat and Ashleigh Thomas, and another for the same amount to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service's business manager Kieron O'Toole.

"Eraring Energy is very proud to be able to continue our support of CanTeen and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and it is particularly pleasing that these donations came about by our staff and contractors staying safe at Eraring Power Station," Mr Hogan said.

Jeff Hogan seems quite readily available for media photo ops. Maybe a bit of two-way genuine stakehoder engagement would go a long way towards justifying Eraring Energy's social licence? Particularly given the fright the community and environment has recently endured with the unknown cause of the transformer explosion and fire at the station.
