KEEN gardener Fran Newman knows as much about growing funds for charities as she does about growing plants.
For four years the green-thumbed pensioner has been participating in Australia's Open Garden Scheme stoically raising funds for charities including the Southlakes Women's Refuge.
"I just love my garden but it is also a way of helping to raise money for needy people and good causes," she said.
Another way she helps the world's needy is by selling potted plants with the money she raises going to Asian Aid.
"I've raised a few thousands dollars now and I get great satisfaction in knowing that every dollar means essential meals for some of the poorest people in the world, yet oddly the Federal government says it isn't charity and donations from it are not tax deductible," she said.
But Ms Newman's current concern is getting her Morisset garden to look its best for the two open days.
"My target is to raise $1000 but we've had strange weather with some plants flowering early so I am having to work a bit to get things growing in their place," she said.
The open days, which includes stalls and produce, are April 4 and 5 at Wireanda, 204 Freemans Drive from 10.30am to 4pm.
Entry is $6 for adults, under 18 free.
