Ratbag thieves can't stop Wangi's carols

15 Dec, 2011 01:00 AM
THIEVES have stolen the sign in Dobell Park advertising the Wangi Wangi Carols this Sunday.

Event organiser Allen Stothard has branded the thieves "ratbags who don't believe in carols and don't care for those who do".

The theft, for the second successive year, has hit Mr Stothard hard.

He starts work on organising the annual carols event in February.

He says it's hard work, but a labour of love because of the communal joy he witnesses when 600 residents arrive to enjoy the carolling.

"It makes you feel like giving up," he said.

"I tied the sign on with very tight knots but they were undone and the sign went missing on Sunday night.

"Still, I've sent out 3000 pamphlets advertising the carols on (Sunday) December 18, at 7pm, in Dobell Park, and I'm sure it will still be successful.

Mr Stothard is the administrator of the Powerhouse Church at Wangi Wangi which started the annual carols event in 1999.

A total of 30 sponsors' names were listed on the stolen sign, including major local corporate firms and smaller businesses such as the local hairdresser, post office, take-away food shop and similar supporters.

Singers from five local schools will be among those leading the carol singing at the park.
