Pupils getting picky over new classes

27 May, 2010 12:00 AM
USING true democratic principles, once a week Dora Creek Public School students now enjoy speciality interest lessons of their choosing.

The school surveyed everybody involved, including the students themselves, to discover what subjects would have particular appeal.

The result was the formation of six speciality groups covering environment, creative art, visual art, rock and water, technology, and games.

Each group has a session every Tuesday.

Teacher Simone Kosky leads the Visual Arts Group.

"We had a blank wall in the playground and I've had my eye on that for the kids to develop into an artwork," Ms Kosky said.

"The children were a bit unsure about the painting at first but as soon as they could see where it was going they were into it with real enthusiasm. They've done a great job so far," she said.

"What makes these speciality lesson groups different is that the children can choose for themselves which group they want to participate in."
