Piper powers price petition

27 May, 2010 12:00 AM
MEMBER for Lake Maquarie Greg Piper is seeking signatures in an effort to get fairer electricity prices for householders.

Mr Piper says the Federal Government's Carbon Trading Scheme has been scrapped and the cost of producing electricity has come down yet consumers are still being slugged.

He has now launched a petition calling for the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (lPART) to reverse a decision to make customers pay almost double their current bill for electricity by 2013.

According to Mr Piper, the cost of producing the State's electricity had actually reduced by 6.7 per cent in 2009.

But he says a hike in power prices would make the State's power industry much more attractive for private sale.

Mr Piper says price hikes should have nothing to do with infrastructure.

"The petition calls for the NSW Government to fund any new infrastructure through capital borrowings paid for by electricity dividends, or in the event of a retail sell-off, through the proceeds of those sales," he said.

The petition can be downloaded from Mr Piper's website www.gregpiper1.com and is available from his office by phoning 4959 3200.

Completed petitions should be returned to Mr Piper's office by this Monday.
