THE aptly-named Sensory Garden designed to appeal to the senses will be formally opened at the Southlakes Carers Community and Aged Care centre, Morisset, February 23 at 12.30pm.
Member for Charlton Greg Combet will attend the opening and the public is invited to tour the garden and stimulate their senses with such tantalising scents as chocolate mints, lemon myrtle, anniseed myrtle and other plants.
Project coordinator Kate Harvison who co-ordinated the garden's formation, said Wyee Nursery horticulturist Russell Brown had worked with her on the garden's design.
Volunteers from the Lake Macquarie Recovery Services at Miracle Haven contributed their services and garden artwork was created by Soutlakes Clients and children from the centre's vacation care program under the supervision of local artist Margrete Erling.
The garden was purpose built to cater for less mobile clients of the Southlakes Carers and contains herbs, strawberries, swaying grasses, colourful flowers, wind chimes and a water feature with plenty of space to absorb the sights and smells.
Funding also came from Greg Combet's office to build a sheltered area for bocce and quoits games.
Other community groups are invited to visit the garden and if you would like to attend the opening ceremony contact the Manager of Southlakes Carers Community and Aged Care, Vivienne Bruce on 4973 3855.
