WYONG Shire Council mayor Bob Graham and federal member for Shortland, Jill Hall, jointly cut the ribbon to a new all-weather shared pathway at Mannering Park on Thursday.
Constructed with funds provided by the Federal Government's Community Infrastructure Grants Program, the new 900 metre pathway starts at Waverley Road and ends at the reserve opposite Campbell Parade.
Pensioner Bill Wynn, a retired fisherman and Mannering Park resident since 1934, said he's waited 75 years to see a new pathway.
"I was an original member of the progress association and at that time we used to start our fishing from where the new path is," Mr Wynn said.
Mayor Bob Graham said the new path should be particularly welcome by people with a disability.
"It will enable the less mobile, particularly people in wheelchairs, to enjoy the waterfront amenity of the area but the path will provide an all-weather means for residents and visitors to enjoy the Mannering Park waterfront," Cr Graham said.
The Federal Government grant of $259,000 covered all preliminary investigation work, design and supervision as well as construction of the pathway.
Cr Graham said he was grateful for the Federal Government's assistance.
"Particularly member for Shortland Jill Hall, for helping to secure the funding and throwing her support behind the project, which will become a popular addition to the Mannering Park foreshore," he said.
Council's Manager of Contracts and Special Projects Mike Long said the the work at Mannering Park was part of Council's long-term strategy to provide pathways around the shire's lakes.
