Lake track opening

03 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
THIS Saturday is World Environment Day and at Sunshine there will be the perfect opportunity to put your best green foot forward on a new walkway to protect nature.

The event has been organised by the Sunshine Silverwater Landcare group which took on the mammoth task of the Lake Macquarie Foreshore Erosion and Siltation Control Project on their 28 hectare Landcare site.

The group used funds from the Federal Government's Caring for Our Country Community Coastcare program to build a walkway on the lake edge, but away from the shoreline to address the increasing foreshore erosion problems in the area.

Working with the Lake Macquarie Landcare Network's Green Team, the Landcare group simultaneously undertook a massive weed removal and native plant planting project.

Sunshine Silverwater Landcare group has chosen World Environment Day to celebrate the success of this project.

The event will include a tour along the new walkway and participants are invited to help plant the remaining plants of the season.

"Foreshore erosion is a major environmental problem around Lake Macquarie. Addressing the problem without reducing access to the lake shoreline for the community is a positive approach to natural resource management, and provides the best outcome for the local and visiting community," a group spokesperson said.

Educational resources will be available free on the day.

The program includes: ¦ 9.30am - 10.30am Morning tea and welcome;

¦ 10.30am - 11.30am Tour of new walkway and community planting;

¦ 11.30am - 12.30pm Sunshine Track walk and BBQ lunch at Sunshine Park.

Meet at Sunshine Park off Sunshine Parade, Sunshine, adjacent to the Sailing Club.
