HERE'S more than a grain of truth in the belief that children find sand pits irresistible.
Indeed, so dedicated to the sport of digging in the sandpit were the young students of Dora Creek Public School that they went right through the sand and were burrowing in the soil beneath.
In consequence, school principal Margo Warham decided the time had come to build a new sand pit in another part of the school grounds.
"We put out a call for anybody who could help us by supplying some sand," Ms Warham said.
But the school fared a trifle better than just scoring a bucket or two of sand.
"We got a whole new sandpit complete with a base and a tailored cover to protect it from animals and it didn't cost the school a cent," Ms Warham said.
"All the materials for the sand pit were donated by Corlette Home Timber and Hardware and the cover was provided by Five Star Boat Trimmers.
"Parents donated their time and energy to build it. It was wonderful because the kids really do love it."
