It's taken 23 months, but crossings now exhibited

29 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
LAKE Macquarie City Council has put on exhibition a proposal for two pedestrian crossings outside Morisset High School almost two years after two students from the school were hit by cars in separate incidents just weeks apart at the same spot.

In September 2008, Hannah Pope, the 13-year-old daughter of Rev Glen Pope, rector of Morisset's All Saints Anglican Church, was thrown several feet into the air when struck by a car while crossing the road outside Morisset High School.

It was a carbon copy of a near identical accident in the same place just weeks earlier when fellow student Kareena Connolly was also hit by a car and thrown into the air.

Rev Pope consequently raised his concerns in the Lakes Mailresulting in LMCC traffic experts visiting the site and agreeing that the existing Bridge Street pedestrian crossing should be moved closer to the school and a second crossing added across Newcastle Street.

The proposed works will be funded by developer contributions and will be on exhibition at the Morisset library.

Written comments to the general manger should be received before Tuesday August 24.
