THE newest staff member at Wyee's Bethshan Retirement Home is literally a pet therapist and a real hit with residents.
She has soft brown eyes, a delightful face covered in velvety golden fur, and she makes her daily resident rounds on all fours.
She's no youngster, either.
Remy is 10 years old labrador and former guide dog who goes to work each day with her carer Bethshan dementia nurse, Michelle Moore, of Cooranbong.
"The dog's former owner needed a younger animal but Remy's training makes her just perfect as a resident companion dog," Ms Moore said.
"The residents just love her. We have one lady who has never been very verbal but since she's been having visits from Remy she's become a great chatterer.
"Remy's main focus is the dementia cottage but she visits residents in all five cottages," she said.
"We have a roster for residents who take her for a walk in the gardens, but it makes a real difference to residents to have her around even if they are just reading a book. You can see their faces light up when Remy comes in."
Director of Nursing, Angelina Thomson, said she was delighted with the pet therapy project.
"It works really well and has made a real difference to the residents," she said.
