Green schooling grows

THE schools program of Landcare coordinator for Lake Macquarie John Hughson is $75,000 richer after Lake Macquarie Mayor and independent state member Greg Piper presented him with a grant from the NSW Environmental Trust last week.

The hand-over ceremony, marked by a tree planting, was held at Teralba Public School, one of 60 schools citywide currently involved in the Landcare for Youth scheme.

"We hope to have another 30 schools join the program soon," Mr Hughson said.

Landcare for Youth targets all age groups younger than 25 years attending schools and colleges and aims to provide resources for on-site projects to give school students the knowledge and motivation to create and protect biodiversity.

"It is an important step in restoring the lake and its catchment, especially important as growing urbanisation puts more pressure on the lake and the areas around," Cr Piper said.

Teralba Public School has created various student intensive landcare projects, including a native and indigenous garden and a working vegetable patch.
