Flower power honour

ANZAC rosemary and Armistice Day Flanders red poppies are already growing in a small but poignant garden of remembrance formally opened last week in Morisset's Yunung Community Garden.

Performing the official opening on behalf of the RSL South Lake Macquarie Sub Branch, much decorated WW11 soldier, Harry Buckley from Wyee Point, planted a symbolic red Flanders poppy alongside a poppy planted by Joy Edmonds whose father died of mustard gas poisoning in WW1.

"I just want to be known as an ordinary soldier," said Mr Buckley who also served in Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam.

Ms Edmonds said the garden was wonderful.

"The garden is now known as the Anzac and Armistice Garden of remembrance and it is there to show our respect for all those brave people who died serving their country," Ms Edmonds said.

Also in attendance were representatives from the Women's Auxiliary and Senior Client Contact Officer for the Department of Veteran Affairs, Paul Lee.
