Flights of fancy spur students

FORMER RAAF top gun Matt Hall says he is afraid of nothing after evading missile fire above Iraq in 2003 and now earning his living navigating low-lying obstacles at 400kmh and 12Gs in the Red Bull Air Race world championship.

But addressing his former high school in Morisset last week for the first time since graduating 20 years ago was another prospect altogether.

"Oh god, what have I got myself into," he joked, as year 10, 11 and 12 students flooded the school hall for one of his three talks.

He aimed to inspire the students to strive for their dreams regardless of their background or other perceived obstacles.

"I just really want to impress upon the kids that it really doesn't matter who you are or where you start from," said Mr Hall, who told students that he almost failed year 11 before finding the motivation to complete his Higher School Certificate and turn his passion for flying into a career.

"I'm an average kid from Morisset High," he said.

"I came from an average family.

"It was just that I had a few lucky realisations where I was able to figure out what was important in life, then when I employed those principles I've been able to do quite well with my life and get where I am now."

Mr Hall, who grew up at Mandalong, ended his military career in January after more than 15 years as one of the world's top fighter pilots to join aviation's equivalent to formula one motor racing.

"We're very proud that he was one of us," said teacher Lloyd Dekker, who organised the visit at the suggestion of fellow staff member Karen Newman.

Ms Newman was three years ahead of Mr Hall when she attended Morisset High and is friends with his sister.

Her year 11 design and technology students have been studying Mr Hall's $50,000 G-suit, which must withstand up to 12 times the force of gravity during air races and boasts fluid-strengthening technology modelled on dragonflies.
