Field not stumped by age

04 Feb, 2010 01:00 AM
GRAHAM Field can't boast a baggy green cap for his cricket prowess, but he deserves something of the kind from Newcastle City and Suburban Cricket Association, if only for his marathon length of play as a member the Dora Creek club.

At 58, Mr Field is unlikely to contest the fact that he is one of the "older" players to don pads and square up to the bowler.

Two weeks ago Mr Field played his 500th game in three decades as a team member of Dora Creek Workers Cricket Club.

"I've never been much of a batsmen but in the period I've still knocked up more than 3000 runs and taken 80 wickets plus 115 catches," he said.

Dora Creek Cricket Club started in 1920s but came to a standstill after two years before restarting in the 60s.

"I joined the club in 1980," Mr Field said.

"I'd had a brief stint with Toronto before that but then moved to Cooranbong and joined Dora Creek and sort of just stayed there."

Still very fit and working as a concrete former, Mr Field says his job gives him valuable exercise and serves as a physical fitness barometer.

"Basically, if I can work I can play, though I'm not a boundary rider any more and need a couple of young blokes with me to do some of the running. I reckon I have still got at least a couple of years active service in me yet," he said.
