Break the gridlock call

18 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
PEAK hour traffic on the arterial Pacific Highway at San Remo is gridlocked thanks to a double set of traffic lights bringing vehicles to a standstill opposite the Northlakes Shopping Centre at least twice a day, protesting residents claimed last week.

The residents met with Wyong councillor Greg Best on Thursday to voice fears for the safety of school children attending Northlakes and Blue Haven Schools.

"The traffic banks back as far as two and three kilometres and because of the way the lanes are set up the children have to dodge between the cars if their mum or dad can't get the car out of the traffic jam," Cr Best said.

Resident Ray Austin said the situation was now so bad that locals see at least one accident a week.

"It's just a matter of time before there is a serious accident and somebody dies and we don't want it to be a child," Mr Austin said.

Cr Best said his motion calling for the RTA to find and implement a solution as a matter of urgency was watered down at Wyong Council's meeting the previous week.

"I'd asked for council to formally notify the RTA that the traffic situation was unacceptable and to request a prompt solution. The motion also called for us to erect signs which state it is an RTA road and not a council responsibility but they [councillors] didn't like the word 'unacceptable' saying it was alarmist. In the end, all that was was agreed was for the council to advise the RTA of the problem," Cr Best said.

"They also didn't want to embarrass the RTA, so no signs, even though most people believe it is us [the council] that has stuffed up.

"My concern is that this is a problem that is going to get worse before it gets better and that it can't be fixed with just a white line and a lane change. That means funding, and that in this climate means a very long wait for anything to happen."
