MORISSET'S new 24-hour McDonald's, which opened on Dora Street before Christmas, offer a new fast-food choice and employment opportunities, but Lake Macquarie state MP and mayor Greg Piper worries it will also result in more litter.
"I am not looking forward to an increase in litter, and I have no doubt that that will be the case," he said.
"Regardless of how much McDonald's try to promote recycling and putting things in the bin, the reality is that a lot of their customers seem to be offenders.
"But whilst the nostalgic side of me worries that this is not what Morisset needs, I am only a small part of the community and we have a large young population that believe this is appropriate, and I believe they will make use of it. I think it will be successful."
Morisset licensee Adam Sherman said the restaurant was "performing well" and that McDonald's, which supports Clean Up Australia Day, was spreading a strong anti-litter message.
"We are intent on maintaining rubbish-free surrounds both for our customers and neighbours and have a number of tools in place to help educate and remind our customers to dispose of their litter thoughtfully, including signage at exit points," Mr Sherman said.
"Like all McDonald's restaurants we also have in place a litter patrol program which sees our people collect any inappropriately discarded McDonald's and non-McDonald's rubbish in the proximity of the restaurant on a daily basis."
