Big bill to pay but it is worth it

IN three years the refurbishment cost has rocketed, but Lake Macquarie City Council hopes to hand over Morisset's former indoor cricket centre to the PCYC by the end of August.

LMCC'S's Manager Community Planning John Ferguson said council's cost in returning the structure to a leasable state is now likely to be around $200,000.

"We have budgeted for $200,000 and it may be we won't need to spend all of that but it won't be far off is my guess," Mr Ferguson said.

LMCC committed $30,000 to the project in 2007 when newly elected member for Charlton, Greg Combet, secured a $124,000 grant for the PCYC to put towards the cost of a fitout.

Mr Ferguson said much of the cost overrun was caused by a spate of serious vandalism.

"We have to replace the amenities block inside the building because it was totally wrecked," he said.

"But over the years the requirements have also changed and although we are the council we still have to submit a development application and comply with all the conditions which in this case include sealing the car park and storm water management, both of which are the result of later changes to the law," he said.

"We've now built all new drainage systems, completed the landscaping, cleaned and remarked the carpark, and reconstructed the front entrance road.

"Inside we are reconstructing amenities and upgrading fire safety and power requirements."

A major item for the PCYC will be a $100,000 purpose built multi-sport floor.

"We are very excited about the project," Mr Ferguson said.

"When it is completed, Morisset will have a wonderful sports facility in the ideal place, next door to the swimming centre. There's even room for possible expansion on the site," he said.
