 Bandaid trip helps Vanuatu natives

Bandaid trip helps Vanuatu natives

11 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
COORANBONG sailor Theo Kuiters is about to turn his 40ft luxury yacht into a medical supply ship and needs help to stock it.

He is calling for unwanted spectacles and donated Bandaids, bandages, dressings, anti fungals and antibiotic creams and ointments, tea tree oil, tea tree soap, elastoplast, bandages, antiseptic creams, and pain killers.

The destination is the island of Aore in the north Pacific island chain of Vanuatu where a Queensland doctor, Dr Alan Profke and his wife Debra, run a volunteer clinic and dispensary for the impoverished natives.

"The native people there are just so poor that anything we can give them is welcomed with open arms. They can't afford prescription glasses and any and all unwanted spectacles we can take to them makes a huge difference, especially for the older island residents," Mr Kuiters said.

Once a year Dr Profke organises a maritime rally with a small flotilla of yachts leaving Brisbane in May carrying volunteers and donated supplies.

"I can carry about a tonne of supplies and anything, including discarded aspirin or pain killer tablets and antiseptic creams are welcome, even those that have past a use-by date," Mr Kuiters said.

"It's important to remember that these are people to whom anything is literally better than the alternative of nothing."

Mr Kuiters' French built spacious Lagoon catamaran is fully equipped with all safety equipment and can be sailed by one person, though he says a small crew is necessary to split watches.

"I am looking for a crew of two or three people who would enjoy what should be a very pleasant trip to the island which was the subject of James Micheners' famous book 'Tales of the South Pacific' and later turned into a hit musical.

"Ideally, I am looking for people with useful experience. If there's a doctor out there who would like to come along, he or she won't have to rough it. Their cabin has a proper double bed not a hammock or a bunk," he said.

Donated items can be left at the Lakes Mail or Mr Kuiters will collect.
